The Beauty of Black & White: Amanda and David’s In-Home Newborn Session

When you think about newborn photography, you might picture a cozy studio filled with props, blankets, and carefully posed little ones. Studio sessions are beautiful (and I’ll be the first to admit, they’re often easier on me as the photographer!), but there’s something uniquely intimate about an in-home newborn session—especially when it’s captured in timeless black and white. I recently got the pleasure of coming to Amanda and David’s home near Durango, Colorado to capture the arrival of their first baby boy and this session did not disappoint!

So, what does an in-home newborn session look like, and why might it be the perfect choice for your family?

1. A Documentary, Organic Feel

In-home sessions lean into authenticity. Instead of posed perfection, I capture your family exactly as you are—snuggling on the couch, rocking your baby in the nursery, or even the big siblings peeking in to say hello. Black and white imagery strips away distractions, highlighting pure emotion and connection.

2. The Comfort of Staying Home

There’s no need to bundle up your newborn or coordinate a trip across town. Everything happens in the comfort of your own space. This makes the experience so much more restful for new parents—especially mama—who can truly relax and nurture herself during those tender early days.

3. Including Furry Family Members

For many families, pets are just as much a part of the story as siblings. In-home sessions allow me to capture those sweet, unscripted moments of your pup curled at your feet or your cat peeking curiously at the new baby.

4. Simplicity at Its Finest

There’s no need for props or elaborate setups. The beauty lies in the everyday details—your baby’s tiny fingers wrapped around yours, the gentle light filtering through your living room, or the quiet moment of rest on your bed. Black and white images elevate these moments into something raw, emotional, and timeless.
