What If Your Baby Won’t Sleep During Their Newborn Photography Session?

One of the most common concerns parents have before newborn photos is:

“What happens if my baby won’t sleep?”

The good news is simple: your newborn session can still be incredibly successful—even if your baby stays awake.

In my experience photographing newborns in Durango for over 15 years, I photograph babies with every temperament imaginable. Some babies fall into deep sleep quickly, while others decide that the world is far too interesting to miss for even a minute.

And honestly? Awake newborn portraits are often some of the parents’ favorite images from the entire session.

Do Newborns Have to Be Asleep for Great Photos?

No—not at all.

While many classic newborn portraits feature sleepy, curled poses, an awake baby still gives us beautiful possibilities.

In fact, awake newborn images often capture:

  • eye contact

  • tiny expressions

  • alert curiosity

  • unique personality even in the earliest days

Those open-eyed portraits often become especially meaningful because they feel so personal.

Even if your baby never fully settles into sleep, I still aim to create a full gallery of beautiful, varied images that capture all of their newness and tiny details.

Why Some Newborns Stay Awake During Their Session

Every baby is different, and newborn behavior is never completely predictable.

Some babies simply do not want to miss anything.

Others may be awake because of:

  • tummy discomfort

  • gas

  • reflux

  • cluster feeding

  • growth spurts

  • sensitivity to transitions, touch, noise, light

This is completely normal.

As every parent quickly learns: baby runs the schedule now.

That is why newborn photography always requires flexibility and patience.

What We Do When Your Baby Is Awake but Calm

If your baby is awake but relaxed, we can often continue with many of the same poses used for sleepy babies—as long as they remain comfortable and still.

At this stage, I often photograph:

  • wrapped poses on the beanbag

  • prop setups with gentle support

  • parent-held portraits

  • sibling images

  • close-up detail shots

When babies are calm and alert, their eye contact can create especially striking portraits.

Sometimes they even blink at just the right moment and appear peacefully asleep in the final image.

Why Wrapping Helps Awake Babies Relax

If your baby is wiggly or easily startled, wrapping often makes a huge difference.

Swaddling helps babies feel:

  • secure

  • warm

  • contained

  • comforted

It also prevents flailing arms from interrupting posing and allows me to safely position your baby in a variety of setups.

Wrapped awake babies photograph beautifully in:

  • buckets

  • bowls

  • baskets

  • backdrop setups

  • parent arms

This stage often creates some of the sweetest portraits because your baby’s face remains fully visible while they stay calm and comfortable.

What Happens If Your Baby Is Fussy?

If your baby is actively unsettled, I slow everything down.

Newborn sessions are never rushed because soothing your baby is part of the process.

As a newborn photographer, I use calming methods constantly throughout the session, including the 5 S’s technique, which many parents also use successfully at home:

  • swaddling

  • side positioning

  • soothing sounds

  • gentle swinging

  • sucking on a pacifier if parent allows

Once baby is:

  • fed

  • warm

  • dry

  • comfortable

these methods often work very well.

Sometimes it simply takes patience.

Why Newborn Sessions Take Longer Than Other Portrait Sessions

Newborn sessions are the longest portrait sessions I offer because babies need time.

A full newborn session may last up to three hours because we pause whenever needed for:

  • feeding

  • diaper changes

  • soothing

  • burping

  • breaks for comfort

This slower pace allows us to work entirely around your baby rather than forcing your baby to work around photography.

That is why parents should never feel stressed if the session feels slower than expected.

That slower pace is normal.

You Will Still Get Beautiful Photos

Even if your baby never fully sleeps, I promise we can still create beautiful images.

Some of the most-loved newborn portraits in my galleries are awake images because they capture:

  • expressions

  • bright eyes

  • curiosity

  • personality from the very beginning

These often become the images parents treasure most because they remember exactly how their baby looked when they first studied the world around them.

Awake Newborn Photos Often Become Favorites

Many parents arrive hoping for sleepy poses—and leave surprised that the awake portraits become their favorites.

Those little expressions, eye contact, and tiny details tell a story that sleepy portraits cannot fully capture.

Both are beautiful.

Both matter.
